St. Joseph Bhavan Mental Health Care Home is a pioneer institution in Kerala to rehabilitate the mentally ill. It was instituted on 16th August, 1993 and is situated at Pullazhy, a small and beautiful village six kilometres away from Thrissur under the Archdiocese of Trichur. The organization is registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literacy, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act X11 of 1955 [Reg. No. 258/94] and under the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 [Reg. No. 0192].
The tragedy is that the society apprehends the mentally ill persons to be a burden. Society did not utilize their potentialities creatively supporting by treatment. Some live their whole lives within the four walls of their dark rooms. They remain secluded and accept a sedentary lifestyle.
It is really difficult for the family members too, to make arrangements for a non-productive family member’s food, clothing, shelter and ever increasing cost of pharmacotherapy. Little attention is paid to their human rights, their feelings or their emotions –although a large part of their problem centers on feelings and emotions. Not only the ill persons but the whole family has to face the situations very cruelly. It is due to this identification Mar Joseph Kundukulam the former Archbishop of Thrissur generally known as the ‘Father of the poor’ and Msgr. Joseph Vilangadan a pioneer in social work founded this institution.
St. Joseph Bhavan Mental Health Care Home with the help of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment arranges the rehabilitation activities with out any discrimination of caste, creed or color for the mentally ill people.
